2024 Featured Artists

Ada County Woodworkers Association

Computer Numerical Control Artists

The Ada County Woodworkers Association presents featured Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Artists for the 2024 IAW show.   In a look to the future, the woodworkers will showcase CNC artistry, in general, and the works of CNC artists EJ Callender, Mike Giltzow, and Ben Tyson, in particular.

Woodworkers use conventional tools to make many of the types of projects presented.  However, CNC adds a new dimension. Come by the Featured Artists booth and learn how CNC helps make the job much more precise and less tedious!

Stop by and say hello to EJ, Mike, and Ben and see all the captivating projects — and, get a look into the future.

Oculus —

The eye defying two-sided CNC chip carved oculus by EJ Callender.

EJ — Finding a miniature scroll saw under the Christmas tree introduced EJ to woodworking as a hobby.  He eventually migrated to commercial construction, furniture making, and woodcarving.  After participating with the SW Idaho Woodturners Association program, “Turn for the Troops,” pens became his passion.  He became a CNC enthusiast after seeing one in action at a Woodcraft store demonstration of eagle carving.  As a dedicated eagle photographer, that presentation hooked him.  EJ teaches CNC skills at the Boise School of Woodworking and is always looking for a new 3D “in the round” CNC project.  He favors, of course, eagles — several of which will be at the show.

Mystery Clock

This award-winning wood geared clock by Michael Giltzow was built from plans from Dick Bipes.  Dick calls it his “mystery clock” as it is not readily apparent how it is powered.  Closer inspection reveals a coil in the clock base emits an electrical pulse every second to push a magnet in the bottom of the pendulum.  All wood parts were cut using a CNC spindle router.

Mike — Michael Giltzow has spent the last 22 years making custom acoustic guitars.  Today Professionals across the United States and Canada play Giltzow guitars.  Mikes new passion is CNC woodworking.  He acquired a CNC spindle router 5 years ago and started new projects using this new technology.  In Mike’s own words:  “I am fascinated by geared objects and like to challenge myself to make interesting kinetic sculptures.  From ancient geared portable sundials, astrolabes, and orreries, to modern slow motion humming birds; I am in awe of CNC technology.  It is remarkable what can be achieved in a small garage workshop with a little knowledge of CAD and CAM software” (Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Manufacturing).

Super Bowl LII Footballs.

The NBC Super Bowl LII (Eagles vs Patriots) Game Day Show featured these Idaho CNC artist created footballs. The CNC Featured Artists will display one of these during the show.

Full Size / Bentwood Shapes

Ben — Are you curious how Ben Tyson creates bentwood shapes like these footballs that appeared in the Super Bowl LII Game Day show?  Or a globe that was featured in a TV commercial with comedians Nick Offerman and Amy Poehler?  It all started after building his first musical instrument, a Renaissance lute, many years ago. Curiosity about what shapes he could create with these techniques led him to build everything from hot air balloons to BB-8 Star Wars droids.
