Northern Cardinal
Idaho Woodcarvers Guild
The Northern Cardinal has a conspicuous crest; cone shaped reddish bill. Male is red over all, with black face. Female is buffy brown or buffy olive, tinged with red on wings, crest, tail. Song is a loud, liquid whistling with many variations. Both sexes sing almost year around. Common call is a sharp chip. Range: Abundant throughout the eastern U.S., with a presence extending into the south and as far west as Arizona. Inhabits woodland edges, swamps, stream-side thickets, suburban gardens. Nonmigratory, but this species has expanded its range northward during the 20th century.
